Be Well – Know your BGL

Knowing Your BGL is a first step to taking control of your health.

Knowing your BGL is about health - not disease - and provides you with the chance to look after your health and stay healthy.

The 2002 Be Well – Know Your BGL campaign featured swimming legend Susie O'Neill who urges all Australians to know their BGL and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

As an athlete, Susie knows the importance of healthy eating and exercise but is fully aware that prevention is the best defence against type 2 diabetes.

'Just as many people know their cholesterol and blood pressure, people should know their blood glucose level. In that way, you can take control of your health,' Susie said.

By asking your doctor about your BGL at your next visit could help you take measures to stay in the best possible health. If current health trends continue, Diabetes Australia expects the number of people with diabets to reach 1.7 million by 2010. Knowing your BGL could reverse this trend and lead the way to better health. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented.

Following the success of the 2002 'Be Well–Know Your BGL' message, a second stage was added to the campaign in 2003 - 'Pre-diabetes. Act Now!' This message targets people most at risk of diabetes… those who have reached the pre-diabetes stage, click here to see the campaign.

The 2004 campaign Make the Connection shows people how to make the link between diabetes, heart disease and stroke to ward off these health problems before they arise. Click here to visit the Make the Connection campaign.
