Run your own Fundraising Event

By supporting the work of Australian Diabetes Council, the community at large already contributes many thousands of dollars towards the continuation of our programs to assist people living with diabetes. But many people feel there is little they can do to assist and often comment "If only there was something else I could do to help" or "…but how do you raise money?" There are many ways you can encourage individuals, groups and companies to give generously, whilst still having fun and offering something in return.

Help with fundraising

Australian Diabetes Council has compiled a fundraising manual to help individuals and groups within the community to begin or continue fundraising activities to help support our work. The manual is free of charge to anyone who is interested in holding a fundraising event to benefit Australian Diabetes Council.

The manual includes:

  • Information on the golden rules of fundraising
  • A list of 101 ideas for fundraising events
  • How to get local sponsorship and an example of an event planner.

The ideas in the manual are designed to stimulate thought and discussion and to illustrate possible ways to raise money by organising activities.

How to get started

You can raise funds for Australian Diabetes Council in many fun ways – but it is also a serious commitment. Follow the steps below to help make your fundraising activity a success!

  1. Contact Australian Diabetes Council and let us know about your idea. We will need to issue you with an authorisation letter. We also need to be sure that your event is likely to be a financial success, so that neither you nor Australian Diabetes Council is left with any unpaid expenses.
  2. Be aware that no event endorsed by Australian Diabetes Council can be used to make money for yourself, or any other charitable organisation.
  3. Because you are raising money to benefit Australian Diabetes Council, you must use our name and logo so that people will know which charity they are supporting. If you produce marketing materials using our name and logo, you must send us a copy for approval.
  4. We are happy to provide you with raffle ticket books and advice on the regulations about ticket sales, raffles and donations, should you wish to pursue this avenue.
  5. You want people to come to your event, so don’t try to hold it at the same time as other events such as big sporting events, other Australian Diabetes Council events or other local fundraising events in your area.
  6. Anyone running a fundraising event needs to consider licences, permits, local council approvals and insurance. Please call us for advice and/or more information on 1300 342 238.
  7. You’ll need to estimate how much it will cost to hold your event. You can deduct your necessary expenses from the proceeds of the event – but you will need to make sure you have proper receipts. You’ll also need to estimate how much money the event will raise.
  8. Any money raised must be sent back to Australian Diabetes Council along with your accounts showing details of your expenses and money raised within two weeks of the event.

To hold your own fundraising event for the benefit of Australian Diabetes Council, please call 1300 342 238.
